Google watches to launch in Q1 of 2017 with Android Wear 2.0

Fall has not been a pleasant time of year in 2016 for smartwatch fans who were hoping for an update to their existing Android Wear devices or who might be interested in what Google has to offer.

First, several of Google’s large partners who produce smartwatches – companies like LG, Huawei and Lenovo – all announced they were stopping plans to release any new devices for the balance of 2016.

Then at the end of September, upon the release of beta 3 of Android Wear 2.0, Google announced the public rollout would be delayed until 2017. Thanks to a tip from Evan Blass, things may finally being turning around to a more positive note.

According to Blass, @evleaks on Twitter, the new Google branded smartwatches will be released during the first quarter of 2017. That appears to be a delay for the devices which were expected to launch in 2016. Apparently the team working on the Google watches were impacted by the delay in the public release of Android Wear 2.0 just like any other smartwatch manufacturer.

The schedule for the release of the Google watches, which are known by their codenames Angelfish and Swordfish, also suggests the Android Wear 2.0 public release will take place early in 2017 rather than later in the year. That will be good news for users hoping to be able to update their devices. This could also open the doors to manufacturers resuming production of new devices as well.

Have you had to put plans for a smartwatch purchase on hold due to the delays from Google and their partners?
