Now It Is Possible to Use Wireless Power To Keep a Drone Flying Without a Battery

Another breakthrough has been made in the world of drones this week with thanks to Dr. Samer Aldhaher of the Imperial College London. But it’s not just drones that will benefit from this fantastic technology. It could be used in a number of different consumer electronics and gets us once step closer to becoming a battery free society.

The drone that Aldhaher has created is what is known as a quadcopter drone and is capable of being used for tasks such as delivering packages. And the great thing about this one is that unlike its competitor’s drones, there is not limit to this one’s battery and could essentially fly forever. How you may ask? By wireless technology, that’s how.

In place of where the battery would normally be on one of these drones, is a coil of copper foil tape. This tape acts as a receiver for electromagnetic waves that are emitted by the plate that the drone flies over. However, while this is a pretty neat idea, it will only work reliably over small distances and the demo drone created flies only about 5 inches above its wireless power base. But, there defiantly potential there and it should not be knocked just yet.

So, although it is still in its early stages of development, this type of battery-less drone just proves where we can take technology when we put our minds to it. A world without batteries would be a world without waiting.
